Robert Macoy wurde am 4. Oktober 1816 in Irland geboren, lebte aber ab seinem fünften Lebensjahr in New York City. Er brachte sich selbst das Druck- und Verlagsgeschäft bei und arbeitet fast 40 Jahre zuerst als Drucker und Buchverkäufer, später als Verleger freimaurerischer Bücher.
