Ein französischer Händler mit dem Namen Estienne Morin, war seit 1744 in die Hochgrade der Freimaurerei in Bordeaux eingeführt worden und gründete im Jahr 1747 eine "Ecossais"-Loge (Schottische Meisterloge) in Kapstadt, französisch: Le cap. an der Nordküste der französischen Kolonie von Saint-Domingue (heute Haiti).

August und machte ihn zum "Groß-Inspektor für alle Teile der Neuen Welt" ("Grand Inspector for all parts of the New World"). Diese Patent war offiziell von der Großloge in Paris unterzeichnet und gab ihm Macht über alle Johannislogen, aber nicht über die Hochgrad- oder Schottenlogen.

Over the next decade, high degree Freemasonry continued to spread to the Western hemisphere as the high degree lodge at Bordeaux warranted or recognized seven Ecossais lodges there.
