Als Ausgleich für die Vernichtung freimaurerischer Bibliotheksbestände in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, der auch die freimaurerische Vorkriegsbibliothek in Hannover zum Opfer fiel, kam es in Niedersachsen zu einer freimaurerischen Bibliotheksstiftung, die nach den Statuten mit der Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek verbunden ist.<br />

Der Grundbestand an Büchern stammt aus dem Vorbesitz des Freimaurers Erich J. Lindner (1904–1981). Ein freimaurerischer Bibliotheksverein (Freundeskreis zur Sammlung und Pflege freimaurerischer Literatur) fördert die Sondersammlung und beteiligt sich auch finanziell an ihrer laufenden Ergänzung. <br />
<br />
Neben Neuerscheinungen nach 1945 sind auch größere Originalbestände aus der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts vorhanden. Dagegen konnten nur einige hundert Originalbände aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert beschafft werden; für diese Jahrhunderte muss weithin auf Reprints zurückgegriffen werden. <br />
<br />
Der freimaurerische Bibliotheksverein und die GWLB sind jedoch entschlossen, ein effektives Forschungsinstrument mit reichem Quellenmaterial zu schaffen. Es besteht Kontakt zum Deutschen Freimaurermuseum in Bayreuth.<br />
