Clemens cut the handle himself from a cedar just outside the walls of Jerusalem. He had it made in Alexandria, Egypt and it was presented to the Lodge on April 8, 1868. He died in 1910.

Samuel L. Clemens (1835-1910) amerikanischer Schriftsteller und Humorist. Geboren 30. November 1835 in Florida, Missouri. Mit 12 Jahren begann er eine Ausbildung zum Drucker. Er zog nach Westen als Sekretär seines Bruders, welcher zum Territorialsekretär für Nevada ernannt worden war. Er war der Lokalredakteur der Virginia City (Nevada) Enterprise im Jahr 1862. Clemens wechselte zwischen Bergbau- und Zeitungsarbeit bis er Beachtung als Humorist fand, ab diesem Zeitpunkt begann er Bücher zu lesen und zu lektorieren. Im Jahre 1884 gründete er das Verlagshaus C. L. Webster & Co., was ein Fehler war, denn dieses Haus ruinierte ihn beinahe finanziell.
