Curriculum vitae

David Harold Lewis, born: Johannesburg 5/8/1928. Son of Maurice Lewis LDS RCS (England) and Sadie Lewis.
Education: City of London School 1938-1946
National Service; Royal Navy 1946-1948. Rank: Signalman
Entered into University College, London to study medicine and dentistry. Abandoned this career on establishment of the NHS and returned to South Africa.
Married 1980 to Trish Burne, deceased 2001 and married Carolyn Sand 2005. Three adult stepsons in North America.

Business Career: 1950 Joined H. Lewis & Co. Ltd. -Millers, oil extractors, animal feed and breakfast cereal manufacturers. Started as storeman, lorry driver, miller, accounts clerk, credit controller and commercial traveller eventually becoming Sales Manager and Sales Director.
Directorships in several companies ending as Managing Director of H.L.International (Pty) Ltd - now retired.

Interests: Music, Bridge, Cooking, Wine, Freemasonry, Collecting Antiques, History, Rugby and Cricket.

Freemasonry

Member since 1971. Initiated in Goldfields Lodge 2478 EC. Has held several offices in the District Grand Lodge of the Transvaal (now South Africa North), PDSGW and recipient of the District Grand Master’s Certificate of Service in 2002.
Past master and founder (and Charter JW) of two lodges, being the Lyceum Lodge of Research 8682 and Exsequi Lodge 8994. Almoner, chaplain and organist of both lodges for several years.
Past Master of Doornfontein Mark Lodge. 1337, PDGSoj. Treasurer and organist.
Past Z of Transvaal Jubilee R.A.Chapter 6143. PDGSN. Organist.
Supreme Ruler for 2015 of Centenary Golden Harvest Conclave 398, Order of the Secret Monitor.

Masonic Papers and Presentations

Has taken part in many Masonic and other play productions and has written a number of Masonic papers several of which were delivered and published by Lyceum Lodge and other lodges- some in open meetings for masons, ladies and visiting gentlemen (in accordance with current Grand Lodge Policy) including:

  • 2012: Freemasonry under the Nazis: (open) Published by the Philalethes Journal of Masonic Research and Letters in the USA. Presented at the World Conference on Fraternalism, Freemasonry and History in the Biblioteque Nationale, Paris in 2015. Presented by the Bristol Masonic Society in May 2015 and printed in their transactions. Lead article in “The Square” June 2015.
