She sold early works of short fiction while she was in college and earned a degree in Journalism from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, and was a reporter for about eight years at several small southern newspapers. She then changed careers and entered the information technology field, writing occasional articles for technical journals.

She was initiated into Freemasonry in August 2006, into a Seattle, WA-based Lodge that works under the Honorable Order of American Co-Masonry, American Federation of Human Rights.
