Eine lustige Abwehr
Das Reiten auf einer Ziege (riding the goat) findet man in vielen verballhornenden Abbildungen über die Freimaurerei. Aussenseiter sollten glauben, dieses merkwürdig anmutende Ritual gehöre zum Aufnahme-Ritus. In Wahrheit gehörte es nie dazu, vielmehr wurde damit auf lustige Weise der Spekulation entsprochen, in den freimaurerischen Tempeln würden alte heidnische Bräuche gepflegt.
Die alten Griechen, so erläuterte man wichtig, stellten ihren Gott Pan mit Hörnern und Klauen in einem zottigen Pelz dar. Frühe Christen benutzten Pan-Darstellungen, um Satan zu symbolisieren und bei dieser symbolischen Dämonologie machte man gern Anleihen, um böse Eigenschaften in einem Sinnbild zu vereinen. Im Mittelalter glaubte man dann, Hexen wurden auf Ziegenböcken reiten, wir kennen das von der nordischen Walpurgisnacht.
Mit diesem abschreckenden Bild schmückte man gern demagogische Abschreckungsgerüchte gegen die Freimaurer.
Die Freimaurer nahmen diese "Vorwürfe" lächelnd auf und integrierten sie humorvoll in ihren profanen Kosmos. Hunderte von selbstironischen Darstellungen zieren Postkarten und Comics.
