Die Karitas der deutschen Freimaurer reicht über den Unterhalt von weltweit 30 Krankenhäusern und Spezialkliniken, die bekanntesten die Mayo Klinik (Mayo, Dr. William Worrall (Vater 1819 - 1911) und Charles Horace (Sohn 1865 - 1939) - gründeten die Mayo Klinik) und das Freimaurerkrankenhaus in Hamburg, über 300 Altenheimen und das Freimaurerische Hilfswerk. Logen unterstützen viele Einzelprojekte wie die Zinnendorf Stiftung für Mehrfachbehinderte in Hamburg, oder ein Albert-Schweitzer-Kinderdorf in Hessen sowie die Diakonie Wiesbaden.

Karitas (von lat. caritas = Teuerung, Hochachtung, hingebende Liebe, uneigennütziges Wohlwollen) ist im Christentum die Bezeichnung für die tätige Nächstenliebe und Wohltätigkeit. Die wertschätzende, helfende Liebe gilt seit den Anfängen des Christentums als christliche Tugend. Die Karitas ist eine Haltung, die sich im kirchlichen Grundauftrag der Diakonie konkretisiert.
Im weiteren Sinne versteht man daher unter Karitas auch die konkrete helfende Tätigkeit, die von den Haltungen der Barmherzigkeit, Geduld und Wohltätigkeit getragen wird. Die Tätigkeitsbereiche sind insbesondere Kranken- und Altenpflege, Hilfe für Familien in Not, das Besuchen von Gefangenen und Solidarität mit Ausgestoßenen.
In der frühen Kirche waren die Diakone die Träger des Dienstes der Karitas. Diese Fürsorge für Kranke und Hilfebedürftige brachte der jungen christlichen Kirche recht schnelle Popularität. Dies wird als einer der Gründe gesehen, dass die meisten Herrschenden, auch wenn sie selbst nicht zu Christen wurden, christliche Missionare zumindest duldeten und manchmal auch selbst unterstützten.
